Socially engaged art includes any form of art that implicates people and societies in collaboration, debate, and social interactions. It can more often be organized as a result of an education or an outreach program (Finkelpearl, 2013). The key element of a socially engaged art is participation with the created artworks that hold an equal or less importance than the collaborative act of forming them. Socially engaged art is often linked with activism as it often involves political issues. Artists within this field often spend quality time to integrate into a particular community that they would like to help, educate, or share with (Miranda, 2014).

This essay comparatively examines contemporary activist groups; BLM and Extinction Rebellion. It is intended to explore methods and strategies used by these groups to engage the community in their practice in comparison with socially engaged art. Also, it highlights what creative practice can bring to art activism.
